Type-C Interface Features and Design Objectives

  1. 1.  Type-C Interface Features:

    • Reversible Plug Orientation:  Direction detection via CC (Configuration Channel) pins.

    • High-Speed Data Transfer:  Supports USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), USB 3.2 (20 Gbps), HDMI Alt Mode, etc.

    • PD Fast Charging:  Supports up to 100W (20V/5A) power delivery, requiring an integrated PD controller.

    • Multi-Pin Definition:  Includes TX/RX differential pairs, VBUS, GND, CC, SBU, and other pins.

  1. 2.   Design Objectives

    • Signal Integrity: Ensure impedance matching and low crosstalk for high-speed differential signals (e.g., USB 3.2).

    • Power Reliability: Robust anti-interference capability and thermal management for high-current VBUS paths.

    • Compatibility: Compliance with USB-IF standards, supporting reversible plug orientation and multi-protocol switching.



3 Key Points for Type-C PCB Schematic Design 

 

1️  Maximize Power Delivery Capability
√ Configure pull-down resistors (5.1K±5%) on CC pins
√ Pay special attention to fast-charging protocol IC selection! (PD3.0 must support PPS protocol)

2️  Signal Integrity Demystified
√ SSRX/SSTX differential pairs must be length-matched (±5mil)
√ ESD protection devices are recommended (Check CL parameter when selecting TVS arrays)

3️ Hidden DFM Traps
❗ VBUS trace width ≥ 0.3mm (for 3A current)
❗ Reinforce GND pins with current-carrying solder pads
